1 Samuel 17:47 “And that this assembly may know that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear: for the battle is the Lord’s and He will give you into our hands”
Hello my dear believing friend. Come with me to mine this text for pearls of great price. It is a young David as the Lord often chooses the foolish to confound the worldy wise man. That giant Goliath has been taunting the people of God. He had placed great pride in his strong stature as well as the use of his sword and shield. David was a shepherd boy who knew that the Lord’s people did not need great strength of their own to be victorious in their life battles. He had wrestled with Lions and Bears and triumphed as a ruddy youth without any physical armor or carnal sword.
Can I ask you how you are fighting your life battles? To what or whom are you looking for strength to come out victorious? Let us notice how David (after taking off the armor and sword given to him by Saul) had something to teach the assembly of Israel. “That this assembly may know”. You would think that the children of God would know full well that our weaponry is not carnal for we wrestle not against flesh and blood. This helps us to see the weakness and vulnerability of God’s people. We tend to get spiritual amnesia as Christians and forget the key to victorious living. The Israelites were doing well until a giant came with a bigger sword.
Oh my dear friend. Beware of the Giant! He will come and taunt you and make you feel very weak. He will tell you that you are an easy target for his attack. He will mock your desire to fight in your own strength. He will laugh as you put your trust in riches and people. Do not allow his schemes to terrorize your soul. Your battle is the Lord’s battle! You have Jesus as the author and finisher of your faith. You have a sword of the spirit for the pulling down of strongholds. You have a helmet of salvation that shall overcome all spiritual wickedness in high places.
Do you know by experience that the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear? Why not accept this truth by faith so that you do not have to learn it by your current circumstance? Do not trust in your own strength for victory in your life battle! Trust in the Lord. Your battle to live godly in Christ Jesus is the Lord’s battle. You are not your own but have been bought with a price. He is the Captain of your salvation. He has promised to never leave or forsake you. He will provide all of your needs according to His riches. It is when you are weak that His grace will make you strong. Faith is the victory and fear shall be your defeat.
So take off the notion that you can have success without the Lord. Throw away those thoughts that you can make it through life all alone. You need Jesus more now then when you first believed! You have a great adversary that roams to and fro seeking your destruction. The grace of Jesus is completely sufficient to carry you safely to His heavenly kingdom. He has given you His Spirit as a guide into all truth. You have a great comforter to remind you that “the Lord does not deliver by sword or by spear: for the battle is the Lord’s”. Look unto Christ for salvation and sanctification.
Jesus has shed His blood to purchase your triumph over all your enemies. Sin and death one day shall be no more. Take your bag of precious stones and cast them at the head of your giant. The church militant shall soon become the church triumphant. You will make it into the promised land where Jesus will wipe all thy tears away. Smile as you travel and fight the good fight on this side of heaven. Let the joy of the Lord Jesus and His promised care give you strength for your current life battles.
